Week 16 Tough Calls
Covering the impact of coronavirus on the sports world
Western Kentucky @ No. 20 Kentucky
Current Records: Western Kentucky 8-4; Kentucky 8-2
The #20 Kentucky Wildcats will be home for the holidays to greet the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers at 6 p.m. ET Wednesday at Rupp Arena at Central Bank Center. UK is out to keep their seven-game home win streak alive.
The Wildcats took their contest against the North Carolina Tar Heels this past Saturday by a conclusive 98-69 score. The oddsmakers were on UK’s side, but they didn’t give the team enough credit as the margin was unexpectedly wide. Their guard Sahvir Wheeler looked sharp as he had 26 points and eight assists. Wheeler had some trouble finding his footing against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish two weeks ago, so this was a step in the right direction. Wheeler’s points were the most he has had all year.
Meanwhile, WKU netted an 82-72 victory over the Louisville Cardinals this past Saturday. WKU got double-digit scores from five players: guard Camron Justice (25), center Jamarion Sharp (14), guard Josh Anderson (13), guard Dayvion McKnight (13), and forward Jairus Hamilton (13). Jamarion Sharp has also now had at least four blocks in his past three games.
This next game looks promising for UK, who are favored by a full 10.5 points. Those who got lucky with them against the spread this past Saturday might want to hold off on placing bets this time since the squad has yet to string together back-to-back wins against the spread.
The Wildcats are now 8-2 while the Hilltoppers sit at 8-4. Two stats to keep in the back of your head while watching: UK comes into the matchup boasting the 26th most blocked shots per game in college basketball at 5.4. But WKU is even better: they enter the contest with 6.6 blocked shots per game on average, good for seventh best in college basketball. Points in the paint might be hard to come by.
The Wildcats are a big 10.5-point favorite against the Hilltoppers, according to the latest college basketball odds.
The oddsmakers had a good feel for the line for this one, as the game opened with the Wildcats as an 11-point favorite.
